Frequently Asked DEFINITIONS

Better Together’s antiracist framework is based on the definitions of racism and antiracism given

by Ibram X. Kendi in How to Be an Antiracist.

race

A power construct of collected or merged differences that lives socially.

Targeted African abduction and slavery was initiated by Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal circa 1444, and the differences were canonized by Gomes de Zurara in The Chronicle of the Discovery and Conquest of Guinea in 1453. The term race was not used to describe these differences until a french poet did so in 1461.

racism

The marriage of racist policies and racist ideas that produces and normalizes racial inequalities.

in/equality

racial inequality

When two or more racial groups are not standing on approximately equal footing.

ie. 71% of White families live in owner-occupied homes in 2014, compared to 45% of Latinx families and 41% of Black families.

racial equality

When two or more racial groups are standing on relatively equal footing.

ie. Relatively equitable percentages of all three racial groups living in owner-occupied homes.

policy

Racist policy

Any measure (written or unwritten laws, rules, procedures, processes, regulations and guidelines that govern people) that produces or sustains racial inequality between racial groups.

Other, vaguer terms for racist policy: “institutional racism”, “structural racism”, “systemic racism”

antiRacist policy

Any measure (written or unwritten laws, rules, procedures, processes, regulations and guidelines that govern people) that produces or sustains racial equality between racial groups.

discrimination

racial

An immediate and visible manifestation of an underlying racial policy. When someone discriminates against a person in a racial group, they are carrying out a policy, or taking advantage of the lack of a protective policy.

ie. redlining, restrictive covenants, federal mortgage insurance, dress codes

antiracial

We all have the power to discriminate. The defining question is whether the discrimination is creating equality or inequality. If discrimination is creating equality, then it is antiracist.

ie. affirmative action, reparations, dress codes

ideas

racist idea

Any idea that suggest one racial group is inferior to superior to another racial group in any way.

ie. Racist ideas argue that the inferiorities and superiorities of racial groups explain racial inequalities in society.

segregationist idea

The idea that a permanently inferior racial group can never be developed and is supporting policy that segregates away that racial group.

ie. 3/5ths compromise, Jim Crow, restrictive covenants, Sons of Ham/Zurahrah, new Jim Crow,

assimilationist idea

The idea that a racial group is culturally or behaviorally inferior and is supporting cultural or behavioral enrichment programs to to develop that racial group.

ie. abolitionists, uplift suasion, caste

antiracist idea

Any idea that suggest the racial group are equals in all their apparent differences-that is nothing right or wrong with any racial group.

ie. Antiracist ideas argue that racist policies explain racial inequalities in society.
